Meet Megan Ronecker, graphic designer at Ruby & Sass:
How did you feel when you signed up for Ease and Profits last November?
I’d been working to build my business for about a year, and I just felt like I was spinning my wheels and not getting very far. I remember talking to my husband in tears because I felt like I was failing. I knew where I wanted to be, but I couldn’t figure out how to actually make it happen anytime soon. I was working 2 part-time jobs and using all my free time to build my business. I was exhausted, disheartened and overwhelmed.
What did you overcome to reach your income goal?
Anna helped me focus on areas that I could use to gain traction and start to grow. I got clear on what my business was, and she helped me create a plan to expand on from that. I (finally!) finished a newsletter opt-in to grow my list, began rebranding myself and my site, and reached out to web designers/developers to create collaborations. Anna also gave me permission that I wasn’t giving myself to work on the social media platforms that I actually liked (Instagram and Pinterest) and showed me how these visual mediums are great for a design business like mine.
Growing a business is overwhelming! How were you able to create an action plan?
Anna helped me figure out how to use my quiet marketing tendencies to my advantage. I knew I provided high quality design work (and awesome customer support), but I struggled to tell people about it because of my introverted personality. She helped me create ways of working and building relationships with other entrepreneurs and using referrals to gain clients instead of endlessly marketing myself.
How did you find a direction for your business?
I knew when I started my business that I wanted to use my passion for design to help other businesses create beautiful branding and other graphics that helped show off how awesome they were. What I wasn’t sure of was the best way to make that happen. Anna helped me take my introverted personality and make it work for me. She suggested building great relationships with web designers and developers who didn’t like the actual design aspect (or just preferred coding type projects) and ask them if they were interested in adding branding and other graphics to their web packages. (And if that’s you, I’d love to chat!). I’ve started reaching out to other entrepreneurs and have been creating some great one-on-one relationships!
What challenges did you run into while taking the program?
My biggest challenge was finding the proper time to devote to it. When the program started, I was working a day job doing graphic design 4 days a week and spending 5-6 hours on Saturdays working a retail job. A month in, I decided to quit my retail job and 4 months in, I went down to 3 days at my day job. That has freed up so much time to work on my own business more and has given me some much-needed time to breathe and relax. Now, I’m able to move faster toward my goals and am starting to hit income goals!
What was the most helpful part of the program for you?
The one-on-one support and strategy, for sure! It has been so great to just be able to go over what I’ve been doing and plan for the next month. I finally feel like when I sit down to work, I know what I need to work on and which to-dos will get me closer to my goals. It’s also been great to have someone to bounce ideas and thoughts off of who’s not as attached to my business. Anna will ask me questions I hadn’t even considered and have amazing expansions to my ideas I might never have thought to pursue.
What strategies did you adopt to streamline your business? We’ve all heard “work smarter, not harder,” but how do you actually DO that?
Having a to-list with deadlines has really been a lifesaver for me these last few months. Anna has helped me create a list of what needs to be done each month and then I’ve set deadlines for when to get them done. I love going back and seeing all I’ve done each month and am actually getting big goals accomplished! I really only have 2 days a week that are completely dedicated to my business, so a to-do list for me is huge!
How do you feel about your business now compared to how you felt about it before the program?
I feel like I have traction. I feel like I have a strategy for my business and have a real direction to take. I’ve hit my first income goal and have been growing each month since I started. I feel like I’ve made so much growth in the last 6 months and have momentum to keep it going!
How is this program different and more effective than other programs? How does it compare with other courses and programs you’ve taken?
The one-on-one support has been the key differentiator for me. I have someone who’s involved and really wants to help me and my business be a success. It’s given me an accountability I didn’t quite have before and the support to know I’m not always in it by myself.
Do you feel that you can use the strategies you learned to continue to grow?
Oh, for sure! I’ve learned so much about strategizing for my business and how to focus on what goals I want to accomplish; I know I’ll be using this knowledge all the time.
What would you say to a new business owner who is on the fence about joining this program?
If you’re wanting direction for you business, or if you’re feeling like you’re not where you want to be (and it’s not looking like you’ll get there anytime soon), Anna has been amazing at helping me with both. She’s helped me figure out where to focus my limited energy, and she has also helped create a realistic strategy to work from. There is no way my business would have grown this much in 6 months on my own. In the beginning, I was nervous about making the investment in my business (and in myself), but I’m really happy I did. So happy, in fact, that I’m doing it again for the next round 🙂
