For the past 4-5 years my husband and I have been dreaming of a weekend getaway home at the Oregon coast or in the mountains east of us. Once I really took up surfing last year, this dream became VERY vivid. I went from thinking “Oh wouldn’t that be nice,” to firmly stating, “I’m going to buy a beach house”.
But the issue was never my desire, it was always the lack of cash.
We already have a home in Portland and while coastal homes aren’t necessarily SUPER expensive, taking on a new home is not an inexpensive purchase. Heck, I’ve been holding back on a Roomba vacuum purchase for years…so a beach house required a “next level” cash commitment. Afterall, when you buy a second home, you need a decent down payment and you also need to find a lender who trusts that you are are financially secure enough to make payments on two homes.
I met with a broker to discuss this three years ago and I even tried to convince my dad to co-sign with me. It didn’t pan out. His money was tied up in other investments and I didn’t have much in the way of savings after just opening The Portland Girl.
Then, in early 2017, I tried again. The broker proposed that I refinance my current home to get some cash. This required me to pay off all my current debt which included all vehicles, credit cards and even school loans with the money I borrowed in the refinance, leaving me with enough to buy beach trinkets, but definitely NOT a beach house.
So that was out.
I felt frustrated. Over the years I had gone from simply desiring a getaway to CRAVING one. The craving could be felt in my body. It was actually making me a little stir crazy. Do you know what I mean? I was getting to that point where it was becoming uncomfortable for me NOT to have the thing I wanted.
This feeling is something I’m very attuned with because it’s the feeling I get whenever I’m about to go through a big life transition. It’s the same feeling I got when I left my job to become a full-time entrepreneur or when I left the country to pursue my dreams of travel.
What can I say? My soul has a bucket list and it’s a BIG one! And when I’m not on track, I know.
It might sound dramatic because ya know…it’s just a silly beach house. But to me, it meant so much more. The beach house represented a creative retreat, a chance to reconnect with nature, and a place to reflect (away from the hustle n’ bustle of the city). It also happens to be where I plan to finish writing the book that I’ve been working on.
But I was using an outdated story.
I kept saying things like:
“I can’t get a beach house because banks are hard on entrepreneurs” – true, but outdated
“I can’t get a beach house because I only have enough for a down payment, not closing costs” – true, but might there be another way?
“I can’t get a beach house because my business needs me here, in the city all the time” – not true at ALL!
These were all excuses (and a had a LOT of them)
These excuses may have been true at some point in my journey, but then they became my “story “and my story was holding me back…
I was reading a book a few months back that was talking about how the whole universe will conspire to help you get the things you want and how if you listen hard enough, you’ll hear info on next steps. These are the “little” voices.
In the world of spirit, communication does NOT happen in the way you might think (audible voices).
It often comes as a thought. As if someone were speaking in your head. This happens to me all the time when I’m doing clairvoyant readings. The more you adjust to it, the more you learn to trust it and feel less like a crazy person. And the more you meditate and clear, the more you can tell if the voices are yours or someone else’s. And at that point, I believe that no thoughts are arbitrary.
Back to the book I was reading – So I set the book down, closed my eyes and simply thought (because again words don’t matter), “what are my next steps to get my beach house?”
In my head, all I heard was one simple message: “Try”
And I was like, “WTF, all I do is TRY!” Do I really have to keep “trying”. What does that even mean?!
And then the next thought that popped into my head was “contact the broker, silly”.
I know, not very magical, right?
No one called my phone out of the blue and told me I had won a house or the lottery. I was told to call my real estate broker…
I had been in touch with a broker named John back in June to chat with him about pursuing a beach house, but I was buried in opening my 2nd location so I sort of just ghosted him (sorry John!). But I liked the guy and made a mental note to use him when I was ready.
So I picked up my phone, called my broker and started the process. Within a few weeks I was pre-approved for a loan and began the house hunt!
A few months later we walked into an old beach house and felt like home. We put an offer in at 11am and it was accepted by 5pm, (longest 6 hours ever).
This past week we moved a trailer full of furniture up and slept the first night in our creaky, cute beach cottage!
The coolest part is that this house is better than I ever thought I would be able to get. Like I mentioned before, I’ve been craving a beach house for a long time, which means that Zillow and other house search features were my best friend. This particular house was much cooler (and with a bigger back yard), than I thought I would be able to afford.
I wanted to share this story because I’ve come across a lot of people who have big dreams, but who are waiting for magic to happen to help them achieve these dreams. They either never listen to the small voices or they think that the small voices should only be relaying messages of complete “non effort” on part of the receiver. This is classic in the book “the secret”. Think it and it shall happen. Yes, it shall, but You might have to be involved in the process to.

3 tips for learning to trust your “little voices”
- Start paying attention to the first thing that pops into your head. Rather than dismissing it and turning towards what seems more “likely” or “practical”, etc.
- Take time each day with yourself where you aren’t DOING a whole lot of anything. Even driving be yourself without listening to a podcast or chatting on your phone can give you the space to hear your thoughts and the wisdom in each of them.
- Clear your mind. For me this is meditation, but for you it could be exercise or a deep sleep. Find what works for you and clear your space of other people’s energy! You might be surprised to find that your energy is what feels BEST to you.
